General Manager
We are seeking an experienced General Manager to lead our thriving organic and local grocery cooperative in Friday Harbor. The Coop has been in operation for over 16 years, with stable, growing revenues approaching several million per year, and a staff that ranges between 10 and 15 seasonally.
The General Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of our operations, including staff leadership, member engagement, business planning, and financial management in partnership with our Treasurer and the Board. The GM will also connect with community stakeholders, cultivate the Coop’s long-term partnerships with local farmers and producers, and maintain relationships with agricultural organizations and other local cooperatives.
We seek candidates with strong managerial experience and good knowledge of retail. The ideal candidate will have strong experience recruiting and managing staff. Experience in grocery or food-related businesses is desirable, but not necessarily required. The position requires strong communication skills, an interest in the cooperative business model, and a commitment to creating a positive and collaborative workplace in our island community.
The General Manager reports to the Board of Directors who are elected by the membership of the Cooperative, and works closely with the President of the Board, with our Treasurer, and bookkeeper to manage the Coop on a regular basis. The GM’s performance is evaluated in December of each year, evaluating the overall performance of the organization and the GM’s contribution to that performance, in addition to specific goals that may be set for each year. Reviews employ feedback from both staff and Board members.
Our target for filling the position is May 1st, and the Board expects to conduct interviews in April, but we can be flexible on start dates for the right candidate.
Interested candidates should send a resume, and a short letter of intent describing their experience to recruiting@sanjuanfoodcoop.com.
Conditions of Employment:
- The position carries an employment contract, renewable annually at a yearly performance review.
- The position is in-person at the Cooperative, involving both work in a retail environment and also in an office setting.
- The GM is expected to work normal business hours on a schedule which is posted along with other staff members, but the GM determines what those schedules are and will have some flexibility to meet their own work/life needs.
- The GM is expected to be available after hours in emergency situations and to take calls if there is an issue that needs to be resolved.
